January means it’s time to PLAN

With Springtime coming up quickly, and while the days are still short, now is the perfect time to get a head start on your 2026 tax filing. Just like spring cleaning, a little preparation now can save you time, stress, and surprises later.

January Is a Planning Month, Not a Filing Month

As we enter a new year, it’s natural to start thinking about your taxes. January often brings questions like “Can we file yet?” or “What should I be working on now?”

The short answer: January is not about rushing to file—it’s about preparing thoughtfully. Done right, the work you do now can reduce stress, improve outcomes, and prevent surprises later in the season.

As we move into filing season, this is when many people experience financial changes like bonuses, new jobs, growing businesses, or investment activity. Reviewing your tax situation now gives us the ability to adjust; rather than react, under pressure.

Think of this as planting the seeds for a stress-free tax season. A little effort now can grow into meaningful savings and peace of mind later. As we move toward warmer weather and longer days, let’s make sure your tax strategy is just as fresh and ready for the year ahead.

Below is what actually matters this month, what to expect next, and how we’re preparing behind the scenes.

Even though most tax returns aren’t ready to file yet, January is still an important month.

This is a great time to:

  • Take stock of any major changes from last year (new business activity, large bonuses, investment transactions, relocations, retirements, etc.)

  • Make sure bookkeeping is complete and accurate through the 2025 year-end

  • Review prior-year results to identify planning opportunities or recurring issues

  • Flag anything unusual so it can be addressed before filing pressure sets in

  • Most importantly: set some goals and benchmarks for your personal and business finances. It's a new year, and now's your chance to set yourself up for success. Budgets and revenue forecasts are a great way to start strong and maintain focus.

Think of January as the foundation. Solid planning now leads to smoother, more accurate filing later.

Its Time to Declutter

Spring is the season of fresh starts, and that includes your finances. As we open the windows, clear out clutter, and reset our spaces, it’s the perfect time to declutter, organize, and plan for the upcoming tax season.

Paperwork pile-ups

Taking time now to organize income documents, receipts, and financial records creates clarity and reduces stress when tax deadlines approach. A clean, well-organized system makes filing smoother, faster, and far less overwhelming.

Decluttering isn’t just about getting rid of old files

Reviewing your financial picture early allows us to identify opportunities, address potential issues, and build a thoughtful tax strategy instead of rushing through decisions at the last minute. The more organized you are now, the more confident and prepared you’ll feel later.

When You Can Actually Expect Your Tax Documents

Most of your tax documents are created by third parties, and their timing is outside anyone’s control. Below are typical “received by” windows to help set expectations:

  • W-2s- By January 31st

  • 1099-NE / 1099-MISC - By January 31st

  • Bank interest and dividends (1099-int / 1099-DIV) - Late January to early February

  • Brokerage 1099s - often mid-February (Sometimes later or corrected)

  • K-1s (Partnerships, S-corps, trust) - frequently March or later

If you’re still waiting on documents in February, that’s normal 😉

As a general rule, if we have all your documents by March 15, you're in the clear. If you miss that date, we'll make sure you're covered with extensions and protective payments.

Our goal is not to file as fast as possible; it’s to file once, accurately, and with the best available outcome. In many cases, that means waiting until the full picture is available and making informed decisions rather than reacting under deadline pressure.

How We’re Preparing for the Upcoming Tax Season

While documents are still arriving, we’re already at work:

  • Reviewing prior-year returns

  • identifying planning opportunities

  • preparing our systems and workflows for a smooth filing season

There’s no need to worry or rush right now. This is the calm, intentional part of the process.

To keep everyone aligned, we will be sending detailed tax season instructions such as timelines, document requests, and next steps before the end of January. That communication will outline exactly what to expect and when.

Until then, rest assured: everything is on track.

Keep In Mind

  • Getting your tax documents submitted early allows us the time needed to carefully review information, ask clarifying questions, and apply the most up-to-date tax strategies available for the 2026 filing season.
